Last year’s bill (HB 1838/SB 5725), the Lorraine Loomis Act, named after the late Swinomish elder who was once chair of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, faced strong opposition from the start. The bill sought, among other things, to require the restoration of riparian corridors on private lands. It failed to make it out of the policy committees of either chamber as it couldn’t muster enough votes from the majority party. This program is subject to appropriation, and since its passage, four counties have been provided funding to accomplish this purpose. HB 1267 has passed out of the House unanimously, out of the Senate policy committee unanimously, and was heard in the Senate Committee on Ways and Means on the 21st. At that hearing, we had a good discussion with members of the committee as to concerns they have with the bill—more accurately, concerns they have with the whole program going back years, focused on the use of funds and reporting. Sometimes, these initiatives might be explicitly public health-focused, while others might have public health implications. An effective public health budget will ensure that initiatives have the resources needed to combat disease, reduce health disparities, and promote healthy behaviors. Both the Senate and House budgets highlight the legislature’s role in promoting and protecting the health of its citizens. Below are several budget highlights that will enable public health to implement policies and programs to keep Washington safe, healthy, and thriving. Here’s an overview of the Transportation and Capital Budgets as they relate to many of our county infrastructure priorities. Read more <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=8a4a9c4831&e=03d5c964a3> In Memorial, the Fair Repair Act ________________________________ <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=477639315a&e=03d5c964a3> HB 1392, which would have expanded access to affordable repair of phones, laptops, tablets, and other devices, took its final breath this week and now feasts at the great table amongst its colleagues in Bill-halla. Affectionately known by friends and family as the Fair Repair Act, HB 1392 and its close companion, SB 5464, wanted very little out of life other than to extend the life of expensive devices that connect people to work, medical care, school, and others – and ultimately, reduce the amount of valuable and potentially toxic materials being discarded.
