Support Our Essential Research <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=VTDNEfZC8tfQ5TCJRcUJ6b-M5-rk1G8zaSLCvwJShAOTM9ir15e5Aw> Fred Hutch cancer researchers Ming Yu, PhD, and William Grady, MD, professor at UW School of Medicine, are working to determine which patients with Barrett’s esophagus are at greatest risk of developing esophageal cancer. Barrett’s esophagus is a condition that damages the lining of the throat. In some patients, this can lead to deadly esophageal cancer. For those people whose Barrett’s esophagus develops into cancer, the diagnosis often comes too late for treatment to be optimally successful. Drs. Yu and Grady aim to change that. They have identified certain biomarkers that are predictive of changes happening at the molecular level in patients’ cells. These changes can cause cells to become cancerous. If additional research confirms their findings, it may lead to a test that can detect esophageal cancer at a very early stage. This could increase survival rates greatly.
