"Some days it’s really cool," she says, "like when you get to go underway on a submarine to test equipment at different depths! Other days it’s less cool, like when instead of blowing the raw sewage overboard, the very tired mechanic accidentally blows it back up the toilets and drains from whence it came..." While historic preservation focuses on saving historic and cultural sites, the environmental ramifications of preservation are many. As the longtime preservation adage says, “The greenest building is the one that is already built.” Through preservation and adaptive reuse of existing historic buildings (like the transformation of a former naval barracks into affordable housing at Building 9 in Magnuson Park), we can not only save important buildings, we can also reduce the waste caused by construction and demolition. According to the 2011 “Sustainability and Historic Preservation” report by the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, even with Washington’s robust recycling efforts, a significant portion of our state’s waste is a result of building construction and demolition. Specifically, what percentage of Seattle’s landfill waste is from construction and demolition?
