HomeMy WebLinkAboutPROCLAMATION re National Park WeekRegular Agenda JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST TO: Board of County Commissioners FROM: Adiel McKnight, Executive Assistant DATE: April 17, 2023 SUBJECT: PROCLAMATION re: Proclaiming the week of April 22-30, 2023 as National Park Week STATEMENT OF ISSUE: National Park Week is a time to explore amazing places, discover stories of history and culture. Parks across the country will host a variety of special programs, events, and digital experiences. National Park Week is a wonderful time to celebrate the work done by National Park Foundation (NPF) and their partners to ensure parks thrive and spark wonder for generations to come. The National Park Service will have five entrance fee -free days, January 16, April 22, August 4, September 23 and November 11, in 2023. The free admission days are designed to encourage discovery and visitation of the country's variety of national parks. With at least one in every state, national parks are accessible places to visit to refresh body, mind and spirit. FISCAL IMPACT There is no fiscal impact to Jefferson County. Parks across the country will host a variety of special programs, events, and digital experiences; and WHEREAS, with over 400 national parks across the country, National Park Week is a great time to discover a new park, learn more about parks, and enjoy their natural beauty; and WHEREAS, National Park Week is a wonderful time to celebrate the work done by National Park Foundation (NPF) and our partners to ensure parks thrive and spark wonder for generations to come; and WHEREAS, the National Park Foundation is committed to connecting people of all identities to the adventures, lessons, and experiences that national parks offer; and WHEREAS, national parks belong to all of us, and it's important that we all feel welcome and safe when we visit them; and WHEREAS, Jefferson County has many National Parks used for camping, picnicking, boating, fishing, canoeing and kayaking; and WHEREAS, Jefferson County's parks offer a variety of camping opportunities from tenting to RV sites, group camps, cabins, vacation houses, and some retreat center accommodations; and WHEREAS, waterfalls, stunning scenery, hiking, biking, or taking walks on the beach, our parks are for everyone, from beautiful sandy beaches to majestic views to forested hiking trails; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT in recognition of our communities' deeply held care for and collective responsibility to preserve and protect our environment, the Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners hereby proclaims April 22-30, 2023 as National Park Week and encourage all residents to enjoy their national parks.
