Volunteers Needed Earth Day is celebrated around the world on April 22nd each year. Locally, the Port Townsend Main Street Program staff and dedicated volunteers go out and spruce up downtown in preparation for Spring. Projects can included extensive weeding at Adams Street Park, planting new shrubs, adding to the planters at Tyler Street Plaza and cleaning street furniture. Merchants in the historic districts are invited to give special attention to their storefronts this week by tackling sidewalk litter and fixing up their planters or ordering flower baskets for their stores. It's also time to take down holiday lights because Spring is here. Thank you for beautifying the historic districts. Interested in volunteering this Earth Day, April 22? We work from 9 am to 12 noon. Repairs to the floating bridge that connects Kitsap and Jefferson counties will now take place via overnight closures on both weekdays and weekends in May, June and September. Instead of four long-term weekend closures we made the decision to separate the work into the three phases. While this will result in more overnight closures of the bridge, it also allows the contractor to begin making repairs in late spring and early summer — when weather conditions are typically more favorable — and keeps the closure hours more manageable for residents and visitors alike.
