HomeMy WebLinkAboutNational Park Week PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, National Park Week is a time to celebrate and appreciate the natural beauty and cultural heritage of our country's national parks; and WHEREAS, Olympic National Park in Washington State is a shining example of the diversity and richness of our nation's protected lands; and WHEREAS, Olympic National Park has a rich history, with eight contemporary tribes of the Olympic Peninsula-the Makah, Quileute, Hoh, Quinault, Skokomish, Port Gamble S'Klallam, Jamestown S'Klallam, and Lower Elwha Klallam -having lived in this area since time immemorial and continuing to maintain strong relationships to the lands and waters now within Olympic National Park; and WHEREAS, since the 1880s,the Olympic Peninsula's spectacular mountains, rain forest, and unique wildlife have captured the attention of visitors, park advocates, and naturalists; and WHEREAS, in 1938 President Franklin Roosevelt signed an act designating Olympic National Park, which has since received international recognition as an International Biosphere Reserve in 1976 by UNESCO and as a World Heritage Site in 1981; and WHEREAS, the Olympic National Park protects a diverse and pristine ecosystem that provides essential environmental benefits, such as water filtration, wildlife habitat, and carbon sequestration. NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT we celebrate National Park Week by recognizing the beauty and history of the Olympic National Park. The Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners hereby proclaims April 22-30, 2023 as National Park Week and encourage all residents to enjoy their national parks. Parks across the country will host a variety of special programs, events, and digital experiences.National Park Week is a wonderful time to celebrate the work done by National Park Foundation(NPF) and their partners to ensure parks thrive and spark wonder for generations to come. The National Park Service will have five entrance fee-free days, January 16, April 22, August 4, September 23 and November 11, in 2023. The free admission days are designed to encourage discovery and visitation of the country's variety of national parks. With at least one in every state, national parks are accessible places to visit to refresh body, mind and spirit. FISCAL IMPACT There is no fiscal impact to Jefferson County.
