In 1913, the San Francisco Bulletin began publishing "A Voice from the Underworld," the serialized memoirs of an anonymous sex worker—all written under the pseudonym of Alice Smith. Hundreds of working class women and prostitutes wrote into the Bulletin in response to the stories. A century later, writers Ivy Anderson and Devon Angus set out to compile and contextualize Alice's memoirs for the first time. The result was Alice: Memoirs of a Barbary Coast Prostitute <https://jchsmuseum.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=11155357fd6e7ba31f3d5bf11&id=97dc300fa2&e=73f4f21267> , a richly illustrated volume containing Alice's stories, a selection of letters from her readers, and an examination of Alice's influence on the modern sex workers' rights movement. Ivy and Devon's work on the book earned them a 2015 California Historical Society Book Award. More recently, their ongoing research about the history of sex work and labor movements in the American West has revealed that most of Alice's stories took place in Spokane and across the Pacific Northwest. Join us Friday, May 5 at 7:00 PM in-person at Northwest Maritime Center and live online to learn about Alice's story, the history of sex work in our region, and some new research JCHS has started in collaboration with Ivy and Devon to learn more about the stories of sex workers in Jefferson County around the turn of the 20th century.
