(Bing Guan/Reuters) Transportation, communication, energy, and water networks are critical to ensuring the United States’ role as a global leader in the fast-paced, interconnected world economy. How to maintain well-functioning, ecologically responsible, and sustainable public infrastructure is therefore integral to foreign policy discussions and necessitates dialogue with policymakers at the state and local levels. Since the passing of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), CFR has been a resource for officials on developing projects and accessing the funding to strengthen and secure the infrastructure they oversee in their communities. Additionally, we regularly deliver information and analysis on the linkages between U.S. infrastructure and economic competitiveness. We look forward to your continued participation in the CFR State and Local Officials initiative and to your feedback on how we can better support the work you are doing. Please email us at stateandlocal@cfr.org <mailto:stateandlocal@cfr.org> . Best regards, Irina A. Faskianos Vice President, National Program and Outreach   The State of U.S. Infrastructure The U.S. economy relies on a vast network of infrastructure, from roads and bridges to internet and power grids. However, much of it is dated and dangerously overstretched. This CFR Backgrounder analyzes the relationship between infrastructure and the economy, and how investments in infrastructure enable the United States to remain a competitive world power. Intended to meet global infrastructure needs with a focus on addressing climate, digital infrastructure, gender-equality and health issues, BW3 has languished since it was enacted. Center for Global Development’s Charles Kenny and Scott Morris analyze why B3W failed and why it is the wrong approach to competing with China in the developing world.
