This year there were six presenters, including commercial fisher Kathy Pool, who told of her encounter with the Canadian Coast Guard; Amanda Thieroff, whose culinary encounter was with a fresh and flopping albacore tuna, and Inger Rankins, whose sailboat capsized and sank in heavy wind off the Port Townsend waterfront, casting her and her husband into the 46 degree water of Port Townsend Bay. Jamie found her calling early. During her college years at UW she was already involved in non-profit organizations that helped runaway teens who had drifted to prostitution. She’s been running Habitat here since 2007 and has overseen an era of growth and outreach. Affordable housing is crucial for the region. Perhaps the most intriguing project on the horizon is the plans for the 17-acre parcel owned by Habitat in Hadlock. With the new Hadlock sewer line, up to 200 homes could ultimately be built there. It will likely be a mix of apartments, condos and even some single-family homes. This pioneering concept will be “permanently affordable” due to the fact Habitat will still own the land under the units and only lease to the owners. This workforce housing will be available to families with annual incomes under $110,000. As Jamie notes, people who work here — teachers, nurses, police, etc. — will be able afford to live here. <https://mcusercontent.com/6df05bfd2eaa0ab6bf92aa5cf/images/5237ce32-06df-b915-20df-4af315526252.jpg> BOOKLOVERS’ CAFÉ hosted by Cris Wilson Alternate Tuesdays and repeats the following Sunday, both 12:30-1pm May 9 / 14 Cris interviews author Jess Walter about his newest book, We Live in Water (reprise airing). CATS IN OUR LAPS with host Phil Andrus Sunday 7-10pm Cats in Our Laps is a radio variety show which features live and recorded music, interviews, and readings. Typically, host Phil Andrus brings in a guest artist or two, sometimes into the KPTZ studio but more often on Zoom. Appearing on each show is Cats’ in Our Laps Poet Laureate Deborah Kate Hammond, a marvelous curator and reader of poetry, and Al Latham, who reads the tea leaves we call the “weather forecast”. May 7 This week’s guest artist in the 8:00 hour is dancer Bill Evans who will chat with host Phil Andrus about his life in modern dance from his youth to his upcoming recital. Mixed in with the conversation will be selections of music chosen by Bill to illustrate the music which has accompanied his career. The 9pm hour features guest DJ Catherine Slaton, wife of legendary Seattle rock DJ Steve Slaton, a guest some months ago on Cats in Our Laps. As you will hear, Catherine’s interests in music are very much her own. Also an author, Catherine will read from her published works. This night’s reading in the 7 o’ clock hour will be by Missy Nielsen and her colleague Ayla, with Missy being young at heart, Ayla young in age, and their readings bringing out the youthfulness in all of us. May 14 To celebrate KPTZ’s spring fundraiser, former KRAB-FM DJ Dennis Flannigan will set aside the musical oddities in his collection in favor of an hour of music which has moved Dennis through his life as a civil rights worker in the south in the 1960s to a community organizer in Tacoma to the State Legislature to community radio as the longtime host of Krabgrass. In the 9 o’clock hour, multi-instrumentalist Hampus Gronberg returns to Cats in Our Laps from his home in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a lively hour of his very personal music. Our reader on this night is KPTZ and Cats supporter Catherine Stone, another international participant in Cats in Our Laps though from not so far away as Hampus. Catherine will wave a maple leaf from her home in Victoria BC and will exhort all of you to Donate Now!
