Included was $120 million in funding for the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP). This level represents an all-time record for the WWRP! This funding for the outdoor recreation sector is a much-needed investment in our environment and in our economy. A $20 million increase over last biennium’s capital budget! “We sincerely thank our legislators for the careful and thoughtful deliberation that went into this budget.” said Christine Mahler, Executive Director of the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition. “In this crucial period, coming out of the COVID 19 pandemic with unprecedented demand for recreation and unprecedented need for conservation, this funding will be critical for the future of Washington." DNR is building six designated campsites and a composting restroom in the Gothic Basin camping area, in the Morningstar Natural Resources Conservation Area, about 25 miles east of Everett. The work will improve protection of the environment and the user experience. We’ll be guided by Mai Li (they/them), and Char (she/her) as they help us navigate our way down a black diamond route for the first time. While many stories have highlighted the struggles of being BIPOC in the outdoors, this story emphasizes the joy. It’s hard to be what you don’t see, especially as a beginner. With this film, we hope to inspire people like us, a couple of BIPOC NARPs, to embrace the power of just showing up and having fun. The purpose of this fundraiser is to help cover the cost of production which includes compensating crew and talent, transportation, camera gear costs, necessary snow gear, meals, and much more. If we exceed our goal, extra funds will go back to Open Slopes to help further their agenda of making snow sports more accessible for everyone.
