Two New Statewide Programs Help Jefferson Land Trust Protect Almost 40 Acres of Farmland We’re thrilled to share that Jefferson Land Trust was recently able to purchase and protect an agricultural property in Chimacum with the key support of two exciting new statewide programs. The Farmland Protection and Affordability Investment (FarmPAI) <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=bd21666295&e=c62e014255> program, offered through the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, provides low interest loans with extremely favorable terms to qualified conservation entities, like accredited land trusts. A second, complementary program, the Farmland Protection and Land Access (FPLA) <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=506c207176&e=c62e014255> program, offered through the Washington State Conservation Commission’s Office of Farmland Preservation, provides funding for agricultural easements on farmland purchased using a FarmPAI loan. The two programs are designed to work together to accelerate the pace of permanently protecting at-risk farmland and keeping it in production, while also lowering barriers to land access for beginning and/or historically underserved farmers and ranchers (as defined by the USDA) <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=b959a5c058&e=c62e014255> . Guided by Land Trust staff as well as experts from the community, the students enjoyed hands-on education about the importance of thoughtful management activities for forest and stream health, and undertook a variety of key restoration projects across several of our nature preserves. One student, Anna, served as "Communications Officer" for the week, and took these photographs. Call for Volunteers: Forest Health Assessment <mailto:cvillalobos@saveland.org?subject=Forest%20assessment%20volunteering> Jefferson Land Trust is seeking volunteers to help conduct hands-on forest health assessments on our preserves. The forest health assessment was developed to evaluate the ecological integrity and functions of forests and streams within our preserves. Our goal is to have ongoing and historical evidence of the progress that our management is making, and to give clear indications to which areas of our preserves need the most attention to accomplish our various management goals. Volunteers will undergo an all-day training on Monday, May 8th with Jefferson Land Trust staff to go over the assessment and practice using the equipment needed for data collection. Forest health assessments are generally undertaken in half-to-full-day increments, within teams of two-to-four trained volunteers (teams are set up following training), and on a flexible schedule. Volunteers will work in teams for quality control and safety, as the assessments require walking off trail and over uneven terrain. All assessments will need to be completed at the teams’ convenience between early May and the end of October. This project also involves entering data into an online data after the assessment is completed. If you’re interested, please email Cristina Villalobos <mailto:cvillalobos@saveland.org?subject=Forest%20assessment%20volunteering> , the Land Trust's Office and Preserve Assistant, by Thursday, May 4th. Springtime Poem by Kelli Russell Agodon In honor of April being National Poetry Month <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=ccd4e5d260&e=c62e014255> , please enjoy this poem by local poet Kelli Russell Agodon <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=e137b6ce98&e=c62e014255> . Song of the Spring by Kelli Russell Agodon In the forest, the voice of god is a treefrog, an evening chorus reminding us it is spring. We believe we are alone here, but we are followed by chickadees, the dirt we carry on our shoes. Because our hearts are shopping carts, we fill them with mossy rocks and messy-headed fern—we know the forest soothes. And when a chipmunk rushes past us and scribbles I find peace in the chaos on a big leaf maple, we know we have found our home. If god is a treefrog, let her find love at a rowdy party, noise-canceling lungs, let's hold hands we walk deep into the forest, all this harmony to breathe and breathe and breathe. Last year, Jefferson Land Trust collaborated with NatureCulture publishing house on a book project <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=1a339965c1&e=c62e01 4255> that matches protected lands with local poets. Thousands arrive on our peninsula, often stopping here to rest and eat, or taking up residence for the summer. Others, who have wintered here, have left and are on their way to their own nesting grounds further afield. Kerry Tremain is a Land Trust volunteer and local nature photographer who generously shares his photos with us. In 2020, he created a Spring Migration on the Olympic Peninsula video, complete with birdsong and a great background music track by his friend Larry London. Now that spring is returning, along with our feathered friends, we thought we'd share a link to the video again <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=194f5fb807&e=c62e014255> . Upcoming Land Trust Events Work Party: Forest Thinning in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor Tuesday, May 9, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Quimper Wildlife Corridor Can you picture a beautiful forest, full of lush vegetation and a sunlight-dappled forest floor? Sadly, that is not quite the case in a small area of the Quimper Wildlife Corridor, where trees are growing so closely together that barely any light reaches the forest floor and the remaining live trees are stressed for water and light resources. This week we'll work together to turn some of those small, stressed trees into nurse logs that will support nearby thriving trees and area wildlife. Directions: Meet at 49th St. and Hendricks in Port Townsend. Parking is limited, so please bicycle, walk, or carpool if possible. ________________________________ Work Party: Trail Trimming at Chai-yahk-wh Preserve Tuesday, May 23, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Chai-yahk-wh Preserve Chai-yahk-wh Preserve on Marrowstone Island is home to wetlands, mature forests, and high bluffs. The almost half-mile forested Greg Lailsh Memorial Trail, named for a well-loved local trail enthusiast and advocate, winds through mature forests of Douglas fir, Western redcedar, sword ferns, and seasonal wildflowers. Join us to prune back encroaching vegetation on the trail. Directions: Chai-yahk-wh Preserve can be accessed via the entrance on Flagler Road across from Griffith Point Road. The entrance lies two miles past the “Welcome to Marrowstone Island” sign on the right side of the road. A small parking area lies just beyond WSU's Twin Vista Ranch. Next, take a restoration site tour of Kodama Farm, the current and future site of one of these projects. (Jefferson Land Trust worked with NOSC and the Kodama farmers to protect the farm in 2021.) Space at this event is limited. If you can't get a spot, you'll be put on the waitlist.
