As you know, the Legislature adjourned without agreeing on a Blake “fix” when it failed to pass E2SSB 5536 <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=ebc2e7daa6&e=03d5c964a3> on April 23rd. As a reminder, the State Supreme Court’s 2021 Blake decision found the State’s simple drug possession law unconstitutional. The Legislature put in place a two-year solution that is set to expire on June 30th. Thus, on June 30th, there will effectively be no State statute that criminalizes the possession of controlled substances. WSAC staff will be joined by Candice Bock, of the Association of Washington Cities, and Russ Brown, of the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, to provide some background on the bill, advocacy efforts that continue to take place, and what you might expect to happen going forward.
