Dear Kate,
I’m Kraig Peck, a small landlord and supporter of rent stabilization.
The astronomical rent increases that our communities have experienced over the last few years are hurting all of us. Sky-high rents destabilize neighborhoods and take money out of the
local economy. When property investors raise the rent $200 per month, that’s $2,400 per year that renters cannot spend at gyms, hair salons, restaurants, or for childcare.
During this past legislative session, I testified, spoke to news media, and wrote my lawmakers repeatedly in support of legislation that would have placed reasonable limits on how much
landlords can raise the rent every year. I added my voice to thousands of others in Washington calling for this common sense policy.
Unfortunately, the real estate industry and its corporate lobbyists, prevailed this year and defeated rent stabilization. But we’re not done. With the Housing Alliance taking the lead,
we grew the movement for housing justice. I’ve heard it said and I know it’s true - the many can defeat the money.
Will you join me in supporting the Housing Alliance during GiveBIG? The first $7,000 donated today or tomorrow will be matched dollar for dollar by a group of board members. A gift of
$25 will mean $50, $150 will become $300, and so on. Every dollar raised will help the Housing Alliance organize and advocate for fair rents, stable communities, and an economy that
works for all of us.
