Thirteen years ago, tragedy struck the Gulf of Mexico when the BP Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded, killing eleven workers and spewing more than 200 million gallons of oil. The
environmental and economic impacts were devastating. More than one million seabirds died, 92,000 square miles of ocean water was contaminated, and countless lives and livelihoods were
affected as industries and coastal businesses were shut down. More than a decade later—even as scientists are still studying the BP disaster's ongoing environmental impacts—new destructive
oil and gas drilling is being planned.
