By all measures, it was a success. The presenters were excellent, the breakout sessions were lively and engaging. And the energy in the room was high. Participants included city, county, transit and port staff and elected officials. A significant number of community members also participated, with total participation around 100 people! T Lab is currently working to summarize the information from the breakout sessions! Look for it in the next newsletter. Announcement and Dates Monthly Transportation Lab Business Meeting The May 2023 monthly meeting is on the 4th Monday, May 22nd at 4:30. If you would like to attend, or have an interest in becoming a member of Transportation Lab, please contact Dave Thielk at translabpt@gmail.com <mailto:translabpt@gmail.com> . Community Conversation Focus Meeting In early June, Transportation Lab will be holding a 2-hour public conversation on parking management and parking reform. The purpose of this meeting is to build a common understanding and vocabulary on parking policy, and to explore contemporary parking policies that promote environmental health, economic vitality and liveability. The date, time, and location has not been determined. If you are on this email list, you receive detailed information. Streets, Roads and Stroads Is it possible to design public right of ways that are people friendly, create opportunity for economic development, and allow automobiles to move quickly and efficiently through the area? It turns out that for 100 years, transportation engineers have focused primarily on moving cars as efficiently as possible. These designs try to make drivers feel safe at relatively fast rates of speed. Unfortunately for pedestrians and cyclists, their needs are often an afterthought. These designs are called roads. Designing for the efficiency of motorists often detracted from commercial economic vitality. In contrast, designing with a primary focus on the comfort and safety of pedestrians and bicyclists’ results in greater vitality in nearby commercial zones. Streets that are pedestrian and cyclist friendly allow easy access to large numbers of stores, offices, eateries, residences, a library and other destinations. In short they are comfortable, and even fun to use if you are a cyclist or a pedestrian. And, motor vehicle traffic is calmer, but less efficient for motorists who are trying to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. These designs are called streets. When an engineer tries to design the right of way for efficient motor vehicle movement, as well as safe and comfortable mobility for pedestrians and cyclists and access to shops and services, the result is more collisions, more noise, more pollution, and less street life because human safety and comfort is sacrificed. Another is more fatal encounters between automobiles and pedestrians. And they sacrifice the vibrance of any commercial area. These designs are called stroads. Transportation Lab believes the right of way should be designed for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users first. In other words, complete streets. Of course, designing for efficient movement of motor vehicles is necessary, but not at the expense of pedestrian and bicycle comfort and safety. Transportation Lab is an Action Group of Local 20/20. Our mission is to create a comfortable, convenient, and safe multi-modal transportation system in our community.
