A community discussion will follow the film. InHospitable follows the story of patients and activists as they band together in an effort to fight UPMC, a multi-billion dollar nonprofit hospital behemoth in western Pennsylvania. In its quest for market domination, UPMC was planning to make vital care unaffordable for hundreds of thousands of vulnerable patients. These patients were taxpayers who had been subsidizing this supposedly nonprofit institution whose main mission as a charity was to serve the community. This illuminating documentary tells the inspiring story of these brave patients and activists who, faced with life-or-death consequences, fight to win the battle for their health — and their community. And capturing their images is a fantastic way to learn more about them and the art and science of photography. Join Jefferson Land Trust as they host members of the League of Extraordinary Observers (LEO), a group of accomplished local nature photographers. They will introduce the birds who call Chimacum Ridge Forest home, whether as year-round residents or as seasonal visitors. This class consists of two sessions. The first session will include a presentation and a Q&A period focused on how to set yourself up for successful bird photography; Session 1 is free, and limited to 40 participants. Session 2 participants will take a field trip to Chimacum Ridge; the cost for Session 2 is $35 (scholarships are available) and is limited to 15 participants. They also accept clean, dry, flexible low-density polyethylene foam (LDPE #4) of all colors, packing peanuts of all colors and types (separated from the EPS/LDPE, and separated into biodegradable [squishy] and nonbiodegradable [crispy] types), as well as white EPS food trays that are clean and free of stains and writing. Materials are inspected at your vehicle, and disqualified materials returned to you. Thanks to the Fort Worden PDA, materials are packed and stored at the Fort Worden Battery Putnam, then delivered to Kent once per month thanks to OlyCAP and Northwest Harvest food bank trucks. At the Kent recycling facility, machines use heat to convert the EPS and LDPE into a toothpaste-like consistency that cools into heavy, glassy blocks of polystyrene or polyethylene, which are then sold to manufacturers of products such as picture frames and construction details. The densified materials are in high demand because they are less expensive than virgin plastic. The toxin level is 1.28 micrograms per liter, which is above the Washington State recreational criteria. The bloom of cyanobacteria in the lake contains toxin-producing species of algae. Anatoxin-a can result in illness and death in people and animals when ingested. Washington State Parks has posted “Danger – Keep Out of Lake” signs at access points to the park alerting visitors of the potential hazards. Recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming are prohibited until the toxins dissipate and the lake is deemed safe for recreation. Anderson Lake State Park remains open for other recreational activities such as horseback riding, hiking, biking and birdwatching.
