Last year, thousands turned out to urge the State Building Codes Council (SBCC) to pass strong codes that will accelerate our clean energy transition. Despite a thorough and open process
that led to the passage of these codes, the building industry is now asking the SBCC to delay implementing the codes set to go into effect on July 1, 2023.
As evidenced by the unprecedented May heat wave, we need climate action now both to mitigate further impacts, reduce fossil fuel use, and build resilient homes and buildings that provide
cooling benefits to Washington residents during increasingly hotter summers. The SBCC should NOT delay the implementation of transitioning heating, cooling, and water heating in new
buildings towards clean and affordable electricity and away from polluting fossil fuels.
