Olympic National Forest welcomes acting
Forest Supervisor
Olympia, WA, May 16, 2023 — The Olympic National Forest is pleased to announce that Al Watson will serve as acting Forest Supervisor while current Forest Supervisor, Kelly Lawrence,
takes an extended leave of absence to support family needs. Lawrence and Watson have been working together to ensure a smooth transition with Watson arriving to the forest on May 22,
2023.
Watson is currently the District Ranger for the Kern River Ranger District on the Sequoia National Forest in California where he has provided leadership and direction for over 10 years.
“I love my job and I love the work but at this time I need to prioritize my family.” said Lawrence, “I’m so excited and thankful to Al for stepping into this role and continuing the
forest’s commitments to tribes, partners, and communities.”
Watson’s experiences include acting as Program Manager for Fire and Aviation Management at the Forest Service’s Washington Office, Deputy Forest Supervisor for the Okanogan-Wenatchee
National Forest, and Forest Supervisor for the Sequoia National Forest. Prior to his role as District Ranger, Watson worked in engineering and fire management on the Gifford Pinchot
and Rouge-River Siskiyou National Forests.
“I’m over the moon for the opportunity to return to the Pacific Northwest,” said Watson. “I can’t wait to meet the amazing employees, tribal leaders, and partners that have helped make
the Olympic National Forest a special place.”
In his free time, Al enjoys outdoor activities, spending time with his family as well as creating delicious dishes in the kitchen.
