Spring has sprung at the County Road Administration Board and a new season is upon us. The 2023 Legislative session is done (well, kind of <https://t.e2ma.net/click/5jhihk/18hk51mb/xl9ynpc> ), and that means the start of interim and all that comes with it. Counties are getting their spring construction seasons underway, and our staff will be hitting the road for county visits and meetings. The Legislature’s final transportation budget for the agency is also spurring us to begin conversations with our stakeholders around county priorities, needs, and the future of public works. It has been a disappointing couple of decades for State investments into county transportation, and this past session was no exception. We would like to dig into why this is and explore strategies for moving forward. I outlined some of my thoughts below but stay tuned for more information. Our agency will also be participating in a number of newly formed legislative workgroups, including one looking at local government public works' capacity to perform work for the State Department of Transportation. This will be an important conversation that could result in significant, lasting impacts on county capital responsibilities. If you are in Olympia, please feel free to stop in and say hello.
