Carl Hanson, Owen Rowe, Kelly Matlock
Prioritized goals below
Employment/Community Inclusion
1. Explore ways to develop a dedicated job coach to develop jobs with County, City and
State governments and organizations.
2. Make presentations about employment to community organizations and clubs, like
Rotary. Use videos of local success stories.
3. Sponsor another “Work with Me” event next October, which is National Disability
Month.
Transition Services
1. There is a continued need to provide information to parents, school district staff and
community members as to the transition/employment needs of students with
disabilities.
2. There needs to be special efforts to increase effective working
relationships between parents and special education staff/school district staff.
3. The process can be overwhelming to parents. Parents need a cheat sheet with all
possible services listed, an explanation of these services and a list of acronyms.
4. Explore options for starting some form of Parent-To-Parent in Jefferson County.
5. Explore the possibility of creating a Special Education Parent Advisory Council
(SEPAC) in Jefferson County.
5. Create more employment-focused transition services in the county.
6. School districts in Jefferson County have different transition plans. Explore the
possibility for more collaboration between the school districts.
Housing
1. Continue to work with OlyCap and Olympic neighbors to explore the possibility of
increasing housing options.
2. Explore how the DD Community can potentially work with Bayside Housing and
Homeward Bound in the future. Explore the possibility of working with Habitat for
Humanity.
3. Continue to increase awareness in the general community as to the housing needs of
the disability community.
Birth to 16 / Recreation
1. Information is not always easily accessible and/or people may not know where to find
it.
2. Alphabet soup – too many acronyms for parents and community members.
3. No step-by-step procedures or information to streamline.
4. Not enough resources for parents.
5. Develop a timeline for parents of appropriate development for their child with
corresponding appropriate connections to resources in the schools and community
(i.e. When to apply for DD services, when should school transition services start, etc.).
6. Continue to work with and improve effective partnerships with
organization/agencies/government and people with disabilities in our community by:
• Continued networking.
• Continue to provide and grow “flight teams” to get more information to families
and school district staff.
• Continue to support Cascade Connection with their community inclusion events.
• Explore ways to create more community inclusion with existing recreational
programs in the county.
Transportation/Safety
Transportation
1. Check with Jefferson Transit’s Travel Trainer to see if there has been an expansion
of presentations in school districts and for parents as to the services and trainings that
Jefferson Transit provides.
2. With continued limited routes and limited hours of bus services, check with Chris
Tibbs from the ARC to see if there is the possibility of replicating in Jefferson County
what was done by the ARC with transportation in the Tri-Cities area.
Safety
1. Working with Accessible Community Advisory Committee (ACAC) sponsor a
cybercrime workshop.
2. Having completed one Coffee with a Cop” event in the Hadlock/Chimacum area,
sponsor a similar event in Quilcene and in Port Townsend.
3. Explore the possibility of CIT trainings and/or de-escalation training by the PTPD
and/or the Mental Health Navigator for the community members and organizations.
