Dear John,
The Supreme Court is at it again -- this time a five-Justice conservative majority is interfering with the EPA's ability to protect our waterways.
Today, five conservative Justices of the Supreme Court decided to significantly weaken EPA's determination of what waterways should be protected under the Clean Water Act. By issuing
an opinion gutting the Clean Water Act's definition of the term "Waters of the United States", the Supreme Court has undermined the EPA's authority to protect our precious wetlands,
endangering the fundamental right to clean drinking water.
This is yet another potent reminder that our foundational environmental laws are only as strong as the Judges and Justices who uphold them. Laws like the Clean Water Act are vulnerable
to judges with conservative judicial philosophies. That's why who we nominate to the federal courts is so important to our ability to accomplish our environmental goals and priorities.
Currently there are over 100 vacancies in the federal judiciary and as we continue our work to ensure clean water for all, it is imperative that President Biden and the Senate swiftly
fill all these vacancies now.
Reach out to your senators here, telling them: We need judges that respect our bedrock environmental laws. Confirm fair and just judges and fill all the vacancies on our federal courts!

While this decision will make it more difficult to protect wetlands, the Sierra Club will not stop fighting and working every day to build the grassroots power to ensure clean water
for all. Our programs, chapters, volunteer leaders, and grassroots activists across the country will work to engage in local, state, and national efforts to protect our water.

Protections for wetlands have been gutted with this ruling. I'm particularly concerned about those wetlands near me in North Carolina and Virginia that are part of the Nottoway River
watershed. We recently held a webinar on decolonizing our waterways featuring Indigenous voices from the Southeastern United States. As a Nottoway Tribe of Virginia member and leader,
it was a great opportunity to converse with fellow Indigenous women in the South about our collective efforts to protect water.

Try as they may, the five conservative Justices who made up the majority in this Supreme Court decision will not have the final say in how we protect our wetlands. With your help we
can pave the way for more fair and just judges and work on building grassroots power to ensure clean water for all.
Nyà:wę (thank you) for your support of our à:węʔ (water)!
