They joined Tribes and other Puget Sound salmon recovery organizations to advocate for federal funding programs aimed at improving the threatened Puget Sound ecosystem and salmon species. These WSAC members met with Senators Murray, Cantwell, and Merkely (OR) and Representatives Larsen, Kilmer, McMorris Rodgers, Schrier, and Gluesencamp Perez. They also heard from a federal agency panel composed of EPA, NOAA, the Navy, and the CEQ about the agency’s efforts in the state. You'll find data that has been collected by the Office of Public Defense (OPD) on county trial court public defense services expenditures statewide between 2010-2021. OPD is statutorily required to disburse state-appropriated funds to counties and cities for the purpose of improving the quality of trial court public defense services. In the interactive visualizations, at the link below, you can select a specific county, view total expenditures for each year, see the total state grant amount of funds disbursed to a county by OPD each year, view the percentage of the year’s total expenditures that are covered by the grant, and learn each year’s per capita expenditures. Here’s Where It May Go A new Whatcom County Jail could cost between $137 million and $207 million, the County Council learned in a presentation Tuesday on the possible cost, location, design and scope of a new facility. It’s the first public discussion of cost after more than a year of meetings to develop plans for a new jail, along with associated services that could include diversion programs and mental health and substance abuse treatment facilities. The county plans to use $8 million in federal COVID stimulus money to fund construction or operation of five new projects aimed at improving mental and behavioral health care, Executive Dave Somers’ office said. Today the vast majority of SMP comprehensive updates have been completed, and there are no periodic reviews scheduled for the 2023-25 biennium. The Shoreline Planning Competitive Grant Program represents a transition from solely funding mandated SMP amendments to also providing funding for locally driven shoreline planning efforts and SMP implementation improvement efforts. All Washington counties, cities, and towns with a Shoreline Master Program are eligible to apply. Klickitat County is the site of all three of Washington’s Wild and Scenic Rivers, which are protected from damming by federal law. These rivers include the Klickitat River, which is one of the largest undammed rivers in the Pacific Northwest, as well as the White Salmon River. Once the site of the beautiful Celilo Falls, Celilo Lake was formed in the southern portion of the state with the damming of the Columbia River near The Dalles. While the lake is now a stunning addition to Klickitat County’s wonderful scenery, it used to be an incredibly significant fishing site for local tribes, inhabited for at least 11,000 years.
