Dear House America leaders,
In remarks <https://www.youtube.com/live/KrLzlWIcUv8?feature=share&t=728> at the U.S. Conference of Mayors on June 3rd, Secretary Marcia L. Fudge thanked the House America leaders and
communities for your collective accomplishment, which saw more than 100,000 households rehoused from homelessness and more than 40,000 deeply affordable housing units added into development
over a 15-month period.
Your leadership under House America helped build national momentum around solving homelessness through the Housing First approach.
You showed what is possible when leaders step up and collaborate across all levels of government.
You treated homelessness as the emergency that it is and tackled it with the urgency it requires.
To solve our nation’s homelessness crisis continues to require bold leadership and urgent action from state and local leaders across the country. And not only as part of a special initiative,
but every day until everyone in America has a safe and stable home.
That’s why HUD is encouraging mayors, county leaders, governors, and tribal nation leaders in all states and communities to carry forward the momentum built by House America, by:
* Continuing to set and achieve local, annual goals to rehouse as many people currently experiencing homelessness as possible;
* Continuing to set and achieve local goals for the creation of new affordable and supportive housing <https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/10/07/biden-harris-administra
tion-announces-progress-in-implementing-its-housing-supply-action-plan/> ;
* Strengthening your collaboration and partnerships with Continuums of Care, public housing agencies, health care providers, and other government agencies and services providers;
* Launching and prioritizing special initiatives and efforts to resolve homeless encampments by connecting people to permanent housing and supportive services;
* Preventing homelessness by strengthening tenant protections <https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/01/25/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-new-actions-to
-protect-renters-and-promote-rental-affordability/> , implementing eviction prevention programs, and ensuring that people leaving institutional settings are not discharged to homelessness;
* Building public support to treat people experiencing homelessness with dignity and respect, to minimize harm, and to avoid policies and practices that criminalize people for having
no home.
Your federal partners will continue to extend our assistance and support by:
* Convening quarterly House America virtual meetings to share federal updates on resources and regulatory flexibilities, recognize community progress, and facilitate peer-to-peer sharing.
* Providing on-the-ground support through our field and regional offices.
* Uplifting examples of success at the local and state level.
* Providing quarterly resource roundups highlighting new federal resources, actions, technical assistance tools, and progress across the country.
Attached to this message you will find the first quarterly resource roundup to help you begin planning and taking action in each of the areas listed above.
As always, thank you for doing your part to House America!
