June 9, 2023 <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a/images/cf04e6fd-150d-4420-a926-ee7a36f2d944.png> COUNTY NEWS Thurston County Emergency Management Officials Worry About Gloomy Summer Wildfire Season Forecast With winter rain in the rearview mirror and summer set to officially start in just under two weeks, Thurston County Emergency Management held an executive seminar for county and city officials from throughout Thurston County on Monday evening. While there is some precipitation predicted for June, Fire Chief Leonard Johnson said there isn’t much else to be positive about when looking at the National Interagency Fire Center’s significant wildland fire potential outlook. From July to September, virtually all of Washington will be at above-normal wildfire potential. “We are expected to be above normal temperatures all summer long,” Johnson said. “And we are expected to be below seasonal precipitation. A NACo survey found that 71% of county respondents said that lack of direct service providers was a primary barrier to providing or expanding access to behavioral health systems, with as many indicating that workforce shortage was a major problem. Three-quarters of responding counties saw an increase in incidence of behavioral health conditions over the past year, with nearly 90% noting an increase over five years. Learn More <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=05137585e7&e=03d5c964a3> STATE NEWS Ecology is Offering a Shoreline Planning Competitive Grant Program for the 2023-25 Biennium Since 2004, the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) has partnered with local governments to fulfill the statutory requirements of Shoreline Master Program (SMP) comprehensive updates and periodic reviews. Today the vast majority of SMP comprehensive updates have been completed, and there are no periodic reviews scheduled for the 2023-25 biennium. The Shoreline Planning Competitive Grant Program represents a transition from solely funding mandated SMP amendments to also providing funding for locally driven shoreline planning efforts and SMP implementation improvement efforts. The new system will allow people to electronically file appeals, petitions, and other case documents with ELUHO’s Growth Management, Pollution Control, and Shorelines Hearings Boards.
