After working at the station for 7 years, it’s been entirely my honor to have served in this capacity, and the work has been both stimulating and fulfilling. As KPTZ nears the long-awaited move to Building 305 at Fort Worden, it is time for someone new to take this organization into our next turn of the spiral. This was a hard decision, yet the time is right to open up to new leadership to move the organization into what will surely be an auspicious and successful future. When I moved to Port Townsend in 2016, this 5-year old station called me to begin volunteering alongside the incredibly dedicated group of people who play important parts in its authentic community culture. Having worked throughout my adult life programming and managing radio stations from coast to coast, KPTZ is the first one I’d met that was homegrown from recent inception. Knowing what a huge lift that entailed continues to inspire me, indeed it’s a tribute to our entire community to have birthed the station and for it to be maintained and operated nearly 100% by volunteers. The vision for KPTZ to move to new, expanded studios was coming to life as I moved into the role of GM, and our extremely successful capital campaign was completely funded through support of listeners and grant funders who rose up to help us build out, furnish and move into the new station. I’m deeply humbled by all that’s been accomplished, working closely with so many people who have come forward to participate in programming the station airwaves. I know everyone is anxious to hear when we will be able to finalize the move and start broadcasting from our new facility ~ me too! We are still working through the final details and the "punch-list" for the last issues that need to be resolved, and we know the day will be here soon. Please stand by as we work to ensure that all systems are go as of day one. As the station continues to grow, there is always more creativity to nurture and bring forward. Together with you, the next leader at KPTZ will have incredible opportunities for continued growth of this organization, in our community where discussions about change are welcomed with keen interest. It has been my objective over all the years to ensure overall best practices for all aspects of operating KPTZ, in order for us to provide the creative outlet as voice for the citizenry of Jefferson County, and beyond. Your support for this to happen has been entirely pivotal to the station’s quality of programming and expanding reach. Thank you for your continued, ever essential and important support of KPTZ! Looking into the future for KPTZ, in that so much has been gained over recent years, I know you will welcome our next GM just as you have welcomed me. Kate’s five years as GM have been years of profound change and growth for KPTZ. Her leadership built a solid operation structure with our many valued volunteers, allowing KPTZ to continue to function, and to actually grow community services, through the disruptive years of the COVID pandemic. Kate also has been crucial in our efforts to move to Fort Worden, an enormous and challenging project that is nearing completion. She has created enduring relationships with dozens of community partners, extending our reach to the diverse communities of the Quimper Peninsula. Kate has given her heart and soul to KPTZ, and for that we are all so very grateful. For these achievements and many others, I would like to thank Kate sincerely on behalf of myself and the Board of Directors. We are confident that her qualities will provide her with many opportunities in the future, and we wish her the best of luck. The Board of Directors is beginning a nationwide search for Kate’s replacement, and we will keep you informed as that process proceeds. Please be assured that we are working daily to surmount the unique technical challenges presented by our move to the Fort Worden station. Lately, with all of the rooms furnished, staff meetings and some day to day operations are already happening in our new home. Meanwhile, thank you for all that you bring to this community.
