Washington now has one of the highest “housing wages” in the country. Rents are out of control, yet state lawmakers failed to do anything about it during the recent state legislative session. That is why we need to organize together, and an important part of organizing is educating the public. Will you write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper or use social media to help keep solutions to our state’s sky-high rents on the table? In the last 6 months, over 8,000 new advocates joined the Housing Alliance and our movement for housing justice. Together we have the power to make change and we invite you to join us this summer to raise your voice. Step number one – let’s make sure everyone knows just how out of control rents are in Washington. Letters to the editor and social media messages are a very effective way to build an even bigger movement while making sure lawmakers keep hearing about the issue. Here is what you can do to get involved: 1. Next, cut-and-paste one of the sample posts below that can be used on Twitter or Facebook: Sample one - Washington’s housing wage rose $5 to $36.33/hour for a household to afford a 2-bedroom apartment, according this today’s Out of Reach report from @NLIHC. Read more: https://wliha.org/blog/2023WAHous ingWageRise #OOR23 Sample two - This year’s Out of Reach report shows that Washington has the fifth-highest housing wage in the U.S. at $36.33 per hour needed for a 2-bedroom apartment. This $5 year-over-year increase is not sustainable, and a perfect example of why our state needs #rentstabilization. #OOR23 3. Get in touch with the Housing Alliance directly!
