Christine Rolfes (D-Bainbridge Island) officially announced today she is stepping down from the Washington State Senate after submitting a resignation letter to Gov. Jay Inslee. Rolfes’ announcement comes the same day she was sworn in to serve on the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners. Rolfes will take over the vacant District 1 seat on the board after her appointment last month. Her resignation from the Senate is effective Tuesday, August 15. Next month, the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts will launch the Blake Refund Bureau, an online portal through which individuals can obtain reimbursements for courtordered fines or fees tied to convictions vacated as a result of the landmark 2021 ruling. Learn More <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=c2cd4d7b74&e=03d5c964a3> STATE NEWS Reimbursement of Public Defense Expenses - Simple Drug Possession With the recent passage of 2ESSB 5536, which addressed possession of controlled substances, counterfeit substances, and legend drugs (referred to as PCS), the legislature will allocate funds to the WA State Office of Public Defense (WA OPD) to financially assist certain cities and counties with the expense of defending indigent individuals charged with these offenses in courts of limited jurisdiction. Eligible counties are those with populations of 500,000 or less, and eligible cities are those with populations of 200,000 or less. Weather has played a key role. The West has experienced heavy snowfall and precipitation, including a series of nine atmospheric rivers in less than a month, according to information from the National Integrated Drought Information System. Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced last week that over $371 million would go toward local governments to use at their disposal for the current opioid crisis. Washington as a whole received more than $370 million.
