The only problem? Your body’s been through the mill. Everything feels new and different. Weird aches and pains abound after cancer treatment, making it hard for patients in remission to figure out whether they’re suffering a treatment side effect or experiencing the first whispers of a cancer recurrence. Most early-stagers know that even after systemic (or system-wide) treatments like chemotherapy and/or anti-hormones, their cancer can become metastatic, spreading from its original site to organs like the lungs, liver or brain, and triggering pain, shortness of breath, headaches and other symptoms. They also know cancer treatment can cause all manner of collateral damage. What they often don’t know is how to tell one from the other. We turned to cancer patients and Fred Hutch clinicians for answers on how to discern between pain and symptoms <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=NyYu3DpF8TWyctt1-G21Qkb-Pf_IAO72NYOBQrpIjm7u8GvXW GdvGg> that are “normal” after treatment from those that need to be evaluated by your cancer surgeon, oncologist or primary care physician. ________________________________ Public Art and Community Dialogue <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=g7QL9ju1rM-3yD0_NkCokzZwAxhwK_iyR2hMEE-EQtAav71b9DpjAg> On June 1, Fred Hutch celebrated the start of Pride month by unveiling the fourth art installation as part of our Public Art & Community Dialogue Program <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=twKliY zH9_FNlNTm8qwV55uvqZ08bMgz4xDZJKyHMJqXyNSzKYY9iw> , featuring artwork “Block #3249 (Mend)” by artist Ariadne Campanella. ________________________________ The Latest Dr. Sara Hurvitz joins Fred Hutch, University of Washington <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=fWvpo7TM9Uiw-UAmqzHjqse2i0DZ7gZATOvWiuk68uj7-xb552hl7w> The organizations announced the hiring of Sara Hurvitz, MD, as the Senior Vice President of the Clinical Research Division at Fred Hutch and Head of the newly united Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Washington Department of Medicine. The finding of a particular genetic mutation, DICER1, solved a puzzle in her life and led to ongoing surveillance of her two children as well. A promising HIV vaccine candidate gets a little help <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=QeZJ-wEfKcNdtOQAz_pleKZ0LDJaabfbAdsdC6M0_UZP47GOuqkKRw> In the 40-year effort to develop a vaccine for HIV/AIDS, hardworking scientists could use some help. New research suggests they may have found some in the form of a common white blood cell called a CD4 T lymphocyte — also known, incidentally, as a helper T cell — that could play a crucial role in a bold and complex new strategy for making an effective HIV/AIDS vaccine. 3rd Annual DEI Summit looks to the future <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=RCxWMEpE57mailadN60BhJxL7xTVo5qKPJnqumcV4r4vatXg6Rv2FA> In early June, representatives from across Fred Hutch met at the organization’s third annual Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Summit, Integrating Critical Change for Critical Cures.
