The Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC) is a vital organization that fosters collaboration, provides training, and advocates for the interests of counties in Washington State. Unsurprisingly, even people who have heard of WSAC may be confused about what the association does because we do so many things! This is why we wanted to take the time to help explain the roles and functions of WSAC, highlight its affiliate associations, and how it facilitates cross-functional teams and enhances representation by bringing together counties and stakeholders from across the state. RAP Study Steering Committee CRAB is forming a steering committee to assist with the preparation and review of the Rural Arterial Program (RAP) effectiveness study exploring if the program is meeting the needs of counties, recommend changes to meet the current needs, or recommend new grant programs to fill the needs not met by RAP. The steering committee is being assembled to ensure county voices are heard and included. CRAB is soliciting volunteers to serve on the steering committee and their hope is to have a broad spectrum of professionals from engineers, project or program managers, and transportation planning representing all 5 RAP regions will participate. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity or would like to volunteer, please fill out their brief interest form or reach out Drew Woods <mailto:drew.woods@crab.wa.gov> directly. The event was partly due to climate change. As the climate continues to warm, these hotter stretches are projected to hit the region with increasing frequency. Two years after that event—the deadliest weather-related disaster in state history—a collaborative effort led by two University of Washington teams, the Climate Impacts Group and the Center for Health and the Global Environment, or CHanGE, has drawn up recommendations for how people and groups across the state could prevent future heat-related illness and save lives. By 1854, Washington State had been formally established and Lewis County had received its final boundaries, which it maintains today. Lewis County is south of Thurston County and north of Skamania and Cowlitz Counties. Lewis County, like many of its neighboring counties, began as a lumber based economy, focusing on both the extraction of wood from surrounding forests as well as wood processing through local mills. While lumber related industries persisted until after World War II, Lewis County’s economy shifted towards power with the discovery of coal in the 1950s. With hundreds of thousands of acres of open space, including rivers and lakes, Lewis County is a hub for hunting and fishing in some of the most beautiful country in the state of Washington.
