Appearing on each show is Cats’ in Our Laps Poet Laureate Deborah Kate Hammond, a marvelous curator and reader of poetry, and Al Latham, who reads the tea leaves we call the “weather forecast”. July 2 Live from Port Ludlow, Bill Mawhinney will read a story of his curating and will follow his reading with music also of his curating. Expect jazz. Then, live from Victoria BC, host Phil Andrus will welcome Martina Peladeau for a conversation and enjoyment of the recorded music of Steluta, a band with international roots in the lively music of eastern Europe. July 9 Reading on this evening’s Cats in Our Laps will be our favorite mom, grandmom, and aunt Missy Nielsen, who will bring a story especially selected for our younger listeners and those who, happy to write here, are young at heart. Our guest artist will be George Kahumoku, known as Uncle George throughout the Hawaiian Islands. The season gets off to a spectacular start with a benefit concert by Centrum alum Diana Krall. Although not all Centrum alum end up with careers exactly like hers, Centrum workshops have helped fuel many music careers. Workshops cut across many genres – including ukulele, chamber music, jazz, fiddle tunes, and blues. Roughly 35,000 musicians and concert attendees have participated over the years. Birman steered the non-profit through the dark days of the pandemic. Revenue dropped 98% during 2020. But 2023 looks like it might be back to 2019 levels. There’s plenty planned to celebrate the 50th – including a series of paintings by local artist Max Grover, Sunrise Coffee is planning on introducing a new coffee line dubbed “a cup of Joe” after Joseph Wheeler who launched Centrum back in 1973. There are many more special events, according to Birman. RHYTHM CONNECTION with host Robert Ambrose Tuesday 1-3pm Rhythm Connection transports listeners to cultures around the world, through incredibly diverse music from the African diaspora. Since its 1993 inception in Alaska, Robert has presented fresh music every week to make you dance or bring you solace, or both. DONN AT NIGHT with host Donn Trethewey Tuesday 7-8pm July 4 Listen in, on Independence Day for a program of all (almost) American artists, including Ron Carter and Corky Seigel. Charles Ives, too. Almost all? Antonin Dvorak's work will be included, too, in the form of a movement from his symphonic work, From The New World (The New World? Yes, that’s us, kids, America). But, what about The Jacques Loussier Trio, Donn? Maybe they'll be in the next week’s program? July 11 This week we’ve got classic jazz from people like Woody Herman, June Christy, and Thelonious Monk as well as contemporary stuff from artists like Bobby Previte, Robin Eubanks, and Terence Blanchard. We’ll also be getting ready for Jazz Port Townsend with a set from three participants, David Sanchez, Matt Wilson and Terrell Stafford. Finally, our “What’s New?” segment for this week will take a look at the new album Momentum by drummer Frederik Villmow with three cuts from that album featured.
