Within, the next few weeks, we will apply herbicides to reduce competing vegetation, control invasive weeds, and ensure that our newly established trees have access to all the resources needed to grow into a healthy, productive forest. This is similar to weeding a garden, making sure our crop has all the sunlight and nutrients it needs. Additionally, removing brush reduces the risk of wildfire. Rayonier employees carefully evaluate each site and, if a treatment is warranted, only apply the smallest amount of herbicide needed to control the weeds. Every part of the project is regulated and scrutinized for safety of both the public and the environment by Rayonier as well as state and federal agencies. All herbicides are certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA), which also tests and licenses our applicators. We follow all regulations set forth by The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) regarding herbicide applications. Usually only one or two treatments are needed over a rotation of about 40 years, and application rates are often far lower than the maximum allowed. A typical site preparation prescription usually includes the active ingredients glyphosate, imazapyr, and sulfometuron methyl, along with a surfactant that helps the other ingredients work better. All applications this year will be done by ground based operations, to minimize disturbance and insure a direct and effective application to the target areas. If you have any questions concerning this treatment, please feel free to contact us at (360) 249-7004.
