Health is also seeking avenues to incorporate MHFA trainings
into the community- stay tuned for more updates.
Healthy Youth Survey discussion- Quilcene schools have
opted-in to pose questions regarding gender identity and
sexual violence. Rowen asked a question about follow up
regarding affirmative answers for sexual violence- how does
the school follow up on these answers (or does the school
follow up at all?). Holly will pose this question to our systems
manager at the Health Care Authority and report back to the
group.
3:00 Guiding Good Choices
Session 4: Saying no to friends while maintaining the
relationship.
Key takeaways:
• It is important to use proper naming conventions when
discussing behaviors/activities with the young people
in your life. For example: Using spray paint to decorate
public structures isn’t just ‘tagging’, its vandalism.
Skipping or cutting class = truancy.
• Empower the young people in your life to ask explicit
questions of their friends when invited to go out.
Questions such as ‘Where are we going?’ and ‘What
are we going to do when we get there?’ can help your
young person make informed decisions on how they
spend their time and with whom.
• Name the problem, suggest an alternative, and leave
the door open. Example:
“I’m not going to skip class with you because I don’t
want truancy listed on my school record. I’ll be
hanging out at Aldritch’s after school if you’d like to
meet up then. No? Well let me know if you change your
mind. I’ll be there until 4”
