Key takeaways: • It is important to use proper naming conventions when discussing behaviors/activities with the young people in your life. For example: Using spray paint to decorate public structures isn’t just ‘tagging’, its vandalism. Skipping or cutting class = truancy. • Empower the young people in your life to ask explicit questions of their friends when invited to go out. Questions such as ‘Where are we going?’ and ‘What are we going to do when we get there?’ can help your young person make informed decisions on how they spend their time and with whom. • Name the problem, suggest an alternative, and leave the door open. Example: “I’m not going to skip class with you because I don’t want truancy listed on my school record. I’ll be hanging out at Aldritch’s after school if you’d like to meet up then. No? Well let me know if you change your mind. I’ll be there until 4” Holly Gumm 3:20 Early adjournment! Next meeting: August 8th from 2:30-3:30PM Holly Gumm
