During a visit to Whatcom and Skagit counties this week, where she sat down for an interview with Cascadia Daily News, Franz focused on the environmental challenges the Department of Natural Resources has faced through her tenure — like wildfires — and her approach to solving them. Amid a housing shortage, rent increases and lack of affordable housing, a larger segment of Pierce County is at risk of becoming unhoused. On July 11, the Pierce County Council voted unanimously to create a select committee on homelessness, which will start meeting twice a month until the end of next year. The first meeting is July 26. WSAC would like to thank all candidates who participated in running, along with all WSAC members who voted. We congratulate and welcome Spokane County Commissioner and WSAC President Mary Kuney as your new NACo Board of Directors representative! STATE NEWS New Elections Laws Passed in 2023 The state legislature adopted several new election laws this year regarding the candidate filing period, voter registration, records of future voters under the age of 18, and the Washington Voting Rights Act.
