He began a hunger strike to demand his immediate release by ICE from detention. After learning of Mr. Singh’s peaceful action on Sunday, six other women in the facility have joined the strike also demanding immediate release from detention. Mr. Singh has been detained for nearly 11 months, his case has been heard in immigration court where he provided all the evidence necessary, yet the government has delayed its decision for another 4 months. This decision can be easily heard on the outside. He and his community support group are ready to pay bond, but none have been set for his release. The other six women joining are Graciela Zamora, Leticia Graham, Maria Stoican, Annie Guerra, Diana Ramirez, and Brisa Hernandez Ramirez. Mr. Singh does have legal counsel and due to the fact that he does not have family or friends committed to hosting him, this has been used as a roadblock for his release. Of all six women joining the hunger strike, only one has a lawyer, and all have been detained anywhere from one month to seven months. At least two have gone an entire month without having received a visit from ICE and no hearing date scheduled. “I believe that no one should strike for their freedom. I believe we should be free, set free or given a second chance. No human being should be under circumstances where poor food or on very poor circumstances like we have been here in this place in Tacoma WA detention center ICE. I believe we have rights and our rights have been violated in this place” Graciela Zamora said in a phone call to La Resistencia. The denial of bond to Mr. Singh by immigration judges in NWDC is a common recurrence, according to TRAC from University of Syracuse that released last week a report <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.co m/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=b60dc7bf80&e=e4038c52b4> on bond granting by immigration judges to people detained across the country finds that “The odds that Immigration Judges granted bond motions for detained immigrants varied this year so far from a low of just three percent at the Northwest Detention Center in the state of Washington to 45 percent at the Krome North Special Processing Center in Florida. This report, based on the latest case-by-case Immigration Court records, summarizes outcomes for over 19,000 bond hearings covering the first nine months of FY 2023 (through June).” NWDC has the lowest rate of granting bonds to people detained in the country.
