Local communities bear the brunt of the epidemic’s consequences with increased healthcare costs, overburdened law enforcement, and devastated families. But tamping down the illegal use of this drug requires collaborative efforts between nations as fentanyl and precursor chemicals are often illicitly trafficked from countries including China and Mexico before being distributed in Europe and North America. The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) regularly reports on the global dynamics of the health crises to help officials and policymakers develop comprehensive strategies to combat them. The University of Washington’s Liane Ong, Garland Culbreth, and Annie Chan argue that the United States should deploy tactics of other countries, such as expanding the supply of naloxone, an emergency medication that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose, and establishing overdose prevention centers.
