Snohomish County was one of the areas hit hard during last year’s fire season. Smoke could be seen for months when the Bolt Creek fire burned over 14,000 acres during the summer of 2022. Ending the program, which brings in about $2.5 million per year, could result in affected departments requesting money from the general fund to keep staff and services and stave off potential cuts. Originally settled by homesteaders passing through to Spokane County, ranching became one of the county’s first and most important industries. After a particularly cold winter in the late 1880s, Lincoln County’s cattle ranches were destroyed, diminishing the importance of cattle in the economy as agriculture took over as the county’s primary industry. Since then, the cattle industry has recovered and remained a fixture in Lincoln County, though inferior to the county’s wheat production.
