Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is recommending to "reclassify wolves from state endangered to sensitive" despite wolves not being "recovered" according to WDFW's own plans. Help prevent the removal of essential protections crucial to wolf recovery by urging the WDFW to retain state endangered species protection for wolves. Today is the final day to comment. Send Your Message NOW <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=62905c788396f3d23f7472ad626dc00630ab043f8f75f8eb77396aad056e3c3236e6f8a3f4554fab3cc32e75cfe02610d0479d360305b39f349eea713095bbfb> Dear John, In Washington State "endangered wildlife" is defined as any species that is "seriously threatened with extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range within the state". Since 1980, Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has designated the gray wolf as "endangered". Per the WDFW Wolf Recovery Plan, wolves are not yet "recovered" in Washington State. The "South Cascades and Northwest Coast" region - the largest of the three wolf recovery regions with the best wolf habitat - has yet to meet WDFW-set recovery goals. Despite this fact, the WDFW, as stated in its draft periodic status review for wolves released in May, is recommending “to reclassify wolves from state endangered to sensitive”. TODAY, August 16th is the FINAL day to comment on this WDFW proposal. <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=62905c788396f3d2cd36ceb8afcec483364d0daed34ae919a112a82916ff843d08100aa3cb36c6a7c724265b99171b579e0c69fae450689155515f73399d7b68> WDFW's draft to reclassify wolves would remove essential protections crucial to recovery, which remains in its early stages. Currently, there are only 216 confirmed wolves in the state and scientists report that Washington can support several thousand. Please, take action TODAY and urge the WDFW to retain state endangered species protection for wolves. Act now and add a personal message on why it's important that wolves continue to have the highest level of protection.
