We need your help to fuel leading-edge research <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=3HzxSNQ2g7iOr5NbIaxpfkLF-sY6FvwyPLpHKhrFYZGx4Z9rjSBILA> by Fred Hutch scientists like Rachel Lex, PhD, and her mentor, Slobodan Beronja, PhD. They are studying fundamental aspects of cell biology in order to learn more about how cancers, including skin cancers, develop. <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=NiPyfoDQV-qDmDlISZVaNUp5CSce99dmKUxkrihRVeGiUrf2Y5cXqg> <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=WiPE6p0yq5QLWhL6gGyGIspOpyiGIHOyihpAh1YkGEAsp_UYm8FXbg> There are several types of skin cancer, and together they are the most common of all cancers. Dr. Lex is exploring how a skin cell’s location — for example, whether it is on the forehead or the lip — influences its chances of becoming cancerous if its DNA is damaged. Skin cells are, in fact, quite good at tolerating changes to their genetic material without developing into cancer, and Dr. Beronja’s team has discovered several mechanisms that skin uses to keep tumors from forming even if the DNA is altered. Dr. Lex now aims to unlock how regional factors affect those mechanisms and the cell’s fate. Her findings could point the way toward new treatments and improved prevention strategies for skin cancers — and potentially other types of tumors, too. Many other promising developments are just over the horizon. Your support today can help our researchers take the next step toward turning them into reality <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=ziv ZOGcD46UyhN1wLR2PQcC6JhsNf8cTfkNxJSQm5JlgOoFrQ8tdnA> .
