HomeMy WebLinkAbout081823 NEWS RELEASE - Naval Magazine Indian Island to host 5k and 1-mile Fun Run on Sept_ 16RELEASE# 23-0818 August 18, 2023 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE INDIAN ISLAND TO HOST DEER RUN 5K AND 1-MILE FUN RUN PORT HADLOCK, Wash., - Naval Magazine Indian Island is hosting the installation’s annual Deer Run 5k and 1-mile Fun Run on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023. “My team at Naval Magazine Indian Island is looking forward to welcoming the community on base for this event and sharing some of the island’s natural beauty with race participants,” said Commanding Officer Cmdr. Todd Galvin. This event is free and open to the public. The race will have a 1-mile paved course near the waterfront, where strollers are permitted, and a 5k course on an unpaved route through a forested area and along the waterfront, where strollers are not permitted. Dogs are not allowed on the installation, with the exception of licensed service animals. Participants will be able to enter Indian Island’s main gate, across Flagler Road from Indian Island County Park, starting at 8:00 a.m. Drivers will be directed to a check point for vehicle inspection and identity verification. A valid form of identification, such as a driver’s license or other state or federal-issued identification with a picture, is required for entry and registration. Visitor parking will be available on base. Day-of registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Base entry and registration will close at 9:30 a.m., and the race will commence at 10 a.m. All participants will be required to stay on base for the duration of the event, through the conclusion of an awards ceremony. The top three male and female participants in a youth and an adult age category to complete the race will each receive an award. A limited supply of race t-shirts will be available for purchase for $20 with a credit card or exact change only, while sizes and quantities are available. Indian Island command merchandise will also be available for purchase with cash only, including hats and travel cups for $25, t-shirts for $20, and coins for $10. Visitors to Indian Island are subject to inspection due to the installation’s security posture. As a reminder, the following items are prohibited on base: drugs or drug paraphernalia including marijuana and marijuana products, alcohol, weapons such as firearms or pocket knives, coolers, backpacks, drones, or cameras with telephoto zoom lenses. Naval Magazine Indian Island is the U.S. Navy’s premier deep-water ammunition port on the West Coast and a conventional ordnance storage site. Indian Island provides munitions support to Navy, Joint and Allied vessels while emphasizing safety, accuracy and efficiency.
