The problem is many patients are completely unaware of the benefits of this therapy or, for reasons unknown, can’t get enough of it. What is this amazing elixir? Sleep. “We have devalued sleep for so long,” said Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center epidemiologist Amanda Phipps, PhD, MPH, who studies how lifestyle factors impact cancer risk and outcomes. “Sleep is viewed almost as a luxury but in reality, it’s an essential human function. And there are clinical and biological consequences for patients with cancer who are not getting as much sleep as their bodies’ need.” Sleep is so valuable to cancer patients that the National Comprehensive Cancer Network just updated their survivorship guidelines to include new recommendations for clinicians to check in with patients about their sleep. Research shows a full third of cancer survivors experience long-term sleep disturbances, yet very few are evaluated for sleep disorders. So, how are you sleeping <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R? i=pQu-JmXIL1VQR_4Ci0F0WlCJhAOizv4PAAaOTTw06eMnRZ4q3HwPhA> ? ________________________________ Events and Seminars <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=kO7SSbfVGlfDbond4f_eAwbIDmqqlSCQKBMM3fwm5DTjYi6ix3ZPQw> Pictured above: BACPAC event chair Yaw A. Cancer and the LGBTQ+ community <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=PO2fvKySXIbPO0y7brVWViVTKu2bUxIGoTDUPBuasSo8vAD0ttivZg> From delayed diagnoses to missing choices on medical forms to simply not being seen, heard, acknowledged or offered much-needed preventive screening — the LGBTQ+ cancer patients experience can be frustrating, heartbreaking and at times, much harder than necessary. Identifying an experimental diagnostic to personalize ovarian cancer treatment <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=i--ys8HlbjQocgC_TZ_wL83KyTB4PkjUsAgjBPzsFQY5zftzMELNAQ> Precision oncology research is typically about finding ways to match patients with a treatment tailored to their tumors. But in new work published by a Fred Hutch research team instead developed a potential diagnostic that can identify patients with high-grade serous ovarian cancer who won’t benefit from standard treatment. Comprehensive Hematology & Oncology Review Course <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=zv29MRiSiglLwATyXeOHyPU2dsFBcSkq7vnHCvY0yD3qGSLWZdFaog> Join experts from Fred Hutch for this accredited symposium intended for physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, residents and fellows interested in a comprehensive update on solid tumors and hematologic disorders. The program will cover data supporting guidelines, recommendations and recent advances regarding therapeutic options for their patients. ________________________________ Good News Aaron Ring receives Anderson Family Endowed Chair for Immunotherapy <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=B0Rm8Fyt8y2-Crv0lbCe40-FStJ1HVqHRjWKPBIDo3g_qvzAJDguvg> Fred Hutch bioengineer Aaron Ring, MD, PhD, was recently named the new Anderson Family Endowed Chair for Immunotherapy. Endowed by Ric and Kaylene Anderson, the chair will provide him with sustained support as he untangles the immune system’s complexities and uses immuno-pharmacological approaches to develop cancer immunotherapies. Hans-Peter Kiem awarded amfAR grant <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=0pfIBzygba9xBYoEU1HWc8NK6ZA8vQyyXwTf2eo0hKWDGyXLgycvOg> The most meaningful HIV cure will be not only safe and effective but also widely accessible for the 39 million people infected worldwide. Fred Hutch’s Hans-Peter Kiem, MD, PhD, is pursuing in vivo gene therapy that confers HIV resistance to a specific subset of a patient’s hematopoietic stem cells and was awarded $480,000 by amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, to support the next stage of his work. Akhila Rajan receives McKnight Award <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=y9G1R8BqJ_aMIVQKxuzcQyq5yDIt_nzolAeqLRGQm1tINb1afgKKcg> The health of our fat cells may influence the health of other organs and Fred Hutch obesity researcher Akhila Rajan, PhD, has received a McKnight Foundation award to map that link.
