September 8, 2023 <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a/images/cf04e6fd-150d-4420-a926-ee7a36f2d944.png> COUNTY NEWS Washington’s Counties File Suit Against the State of Washington for Unconstitutional Indigent Defense System Today, the Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC)—joined by Pacific, Lincoln, and Yakima Counties—filed suit against the State of Washington, asserting that the State’s trial court indigent defense system is unconstitutional and asking the court to direct the State to provide adequate funding for trial court indigent defense services from dependable and regular state sources or, alternatively, provide such services directly. WSAC’s goal in filing this lawsuit is to compel the State to consistently fund a uniform system of indigent defense, a crucial part of our justice system. The counties are willing to continue their work on behalf of the State but cannot do so without statewide funding. WSAC stands ready to work with the State at the executive, legislative, and judicial levels on any solutions that bring our system into constitutional compliance and serve our residents. Building relationships with state representatives and the press is the way to ensure counties still have a seat at the table amid the national rise in state preemption bills, according to county state association directors. The Washington State EV Charging program is offering the first round of funding - $64 million in incentives to install Level 2 and DC fast chargers throughout the state, with a goal of directing 40% of funding into overburdened and vulnerable communities.
