September 15, 2023 <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a/images/cf04e6fd-150d-4420-a926-ee7a36f2d944.png> FEDERAL NEWS County Officials Urged to ‘Get Creative’ to Meet Housing Affordability Challenge County officials explored answers to the housing affordability problem during a panel discussion Saturday moderated by Valley County, Idaho Commissioner Sherry Maupin, who co-chairs the NACo Housing Task Force <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=8828a6e6c8&e=03d5c964a3> . Even rural counties like hers, with a population of about 12,500, see housing challenges, she noted. NACo President Denise Winfrey says “People who should be out and on their own are still in the basement, in spare rooms, still on the couch … because they can’t afford to go anywhere.” When it comes to housing affordability, no matter what size your county, it’s likely a problem with no easy answers. Learn More <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=165f5fb2dc&e=03d5c964a3> COUNTY NEWS Washington Counties Sue State Over Indigent Criminal Defense Costs A new lawsuit alleges Washington state has long failed to adequately fund its 39 counties in providing legal counsel to criminal defendants who can’t afford to hire their own attorneys. The lawsuit was filed last Friday in Thurston County Superior Court by the Washington State Association of Counties and Lincoln, Pacific and Yakima counties individually. The first blog covered the structure and benefits of affordable housing provided by CLTs while this one focuses on CLT/local government partnerships and strategies to actively support CLTs. While this model has been around for decades, cities and counties are increasingly seeing the benefits of CLTs operating in their communities. This has led many municipalities to seek out ways to support and partner with organizations, whether it be helping them get off the ground or sustaining long-standing community efforts. Community Wildfire Defense Grants (CWDG) help at-risk communities and Tribes plan for and reduce the risk of wildfire by awarding funds for creating/updating Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPPs) and implementing community-based projects described in CWPPs that reduce wildfire risk and improve community resiliency in response to wildfires. Endorsed teams are eligible to receive funding from the statewide 988 behavioral health crisis response and suicide prevention line account. The HCA is holding a series of listening sessions, including one for public health agencies and city or county government entities, to discuss HB 1334 and crisis team endorsements. Participation is intended for those who identify with one of the groups listed for that session, and who are or could be involved in the in administering, managing, operating, or comprising personnel of a community-based crisis team. The listening session for public health agencies and city of county government entities is Monday, September 18th from 3:05 to 4:30 pm.
