Greetings Commissioners Brotherton, Dean and Eisenhour,
I see there is a workshop scheduled for Sept 18 at 1:30 pm regarding Next Steps with DNR regarding Jefferson County State Forests, including public comment. I regret that I'm not able
to attend. Instead I am offering comments as a citizen of Jefferson County in anticipation of the meeting, for your consideration.
Protecting older forests in Jefferson County is imperative in order to move us toward a sustainable climate. There is a huge reservoir of carbon stored in these older forests and every
year they remove more atmospheric carbon. This is a topic in which you Commissioners have been engaging for years. On June 27, the Commissioners wrote a letter to Hilary Franz, Commissioner
of Public Lands, requesting that DNR initiate the process to expand the Dabob Bay Natural Area boundaries as shown on a map that was attached to the letter.
I support this action to expand the Dabob Bay Natural Area and urge you to take the appropriate actions to do this, in consideration of DNR's response to your June 27 letter. I should
add that I support prioritizing and protecting older forests in Jefferson County generally, with an eye toward optimizing atmospheric carbon removal.
I look forward to seeing a recording of this Workshop. Thank you for your efforts in this area.
