We will be celebrating the work of outdoor leader Bill Chapman with the help of former Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell. We will also highlight and celebrate the work of Climbers of Color, Hunters of Color, and Salish Coast Youth Stewardship Corps! His consistent efforts over the years have helped make Washington’s forests, plains, trails, and waterways crown jewels of our state. To accomplish its mission, Climbers of Color provides supportive mentorship, technical training and access to key resources including gear and scholarships to Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color and their intersecting demographics. HOC's mission is to create accessible, equitable opportunities for Black, Indigenous, and All People of Color (BIPOC) in conservation and hunting by dismantling barriers to entry through educational opportunities, mentorship, and providing resources. HOC operations on a national level across the United States and sovereign tribal nations, including here in Washington. Led by their Washington State Ambassador, Malcolm Legette, HOC regularly hosts meetups, training and mentorship for everything from fishing, to duck hunting, to big game hunting, and of course, conservation practices. A component of the program also engages with Tribal elders and provides cultural learning experiences for the community at large. WWRC occasionally endorses or takes other actions beyond promoting the Washington Wildlife & Recreation Program (WWRP) when a public policy issue directly and significantly aligns with its strategic plan or annual goals. The Clover Park Technical College used this grant to acquire 6.93 acres of land to provide permanent protection of two Garry (Oregon White) Oak savanna habitats, a wetland, and buffer areas, which support a variety of vegetation and wildlife species. The site is used by migrating waterfowl. This is the last remaining wetland of this size in western Pierce County. After the tragic death of Jess's partner at the height of her career, she spiraled into a cycle of self destruction, grief and despair. Compounded by head injuries and mental health issues, the circumstances seemed insurmountable. Jess's only way out was within — as she faces her deepest fears, she reminds us that not all wounds are meant to heal.
