Jefferson County Planning Commission Application Applicant Information First Name Amy Last Name Hiatt Phone Number 360-316-4011 Email Address priatt@olympus.net Address 2124 Wilson Street City Port Townsend State WA Zip Code 98368 Commisioner District 1 Interview Questions 1. What is your educational, professional, and/or volunteer experience that relates to serving on the Jefferson County Planning Commission? I'm a registered architect who has lived and practiced primarily in Port Townsend and Jefferson County since 1990. Through my work I've become quite familiar with the principles of land-use planning, and the development and implementation of land-use regulations. I've been involved a few times as a private citizen and land-owner in issues that have come before the Planning Commission, such as the lengthy and controversial process of updating of the Critical Areas Ordinance a decade or so ago and, more recently, an application for a re-zone in the District 2 neighborhood where my husband and I own property. 2. What other skills or qualities do you have that may help you serve as an effective planning commissioner? I like to think that I'm a good communicator. I'm also a pretty good listener. Having lived in the area for almost 35 years, I'm reasonably well-acquainted with the environmental, economic, and political issues that need to be considered in making planning recommendations. 3. Regularly scheduled meetings occur twice monthly – typically the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Will you be able to fulfill the the schedule through the end of the 4-year term? Please explain. Yes. I am semi-retired and working from home so my schedule is reasonably open and flexible. I believe I will have the time to read, research, attend meetings, and contribute effectively to items that come up on the agenda. 4. The Planning Commission serves to hold public meetings and make recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners. How do you approach decision-making in a setting where there are multiple complex issues with the possibility of strong emotions behind proponents or opponents of the issue? I know from experience that it can be difficult at times to keep things on an "even keel" when there are strong emotions involved. Public input must be heard and acknowledged respectfully however loud or faint the voice. Discussions prior to motions should be referenced to established planning practices and adopted goals and policies (like the Comp Plan), and the findings behind any decision clearly articulated. 10. Do you have any questions for us? Yes Questions to Interviewers Not a question. I'd just like to point out that I'm applying for a seat in District 1 because my current residence is at a home I own in Port Townsend (2124 Wilson Street). I also own (with my husband) property in District 2 at 234 Sand Road where we are (very slowly) building a new house. I don't anticipate moving into it for another 2 years.
