In 2013, a devastating outbreak of a mysterious disease known as seastar wasting (SSW) began to spread in our region and along our entire coast, from Alaska to México. It impacted most if not all of our local seastar species to some degree, but sunflower stars (Pycnopodia helianthoides) were hit the worst. In 2019, in partnership with the Nature Conservancy of California, Dr. Hodin and his team began the first ever captive breeding program for this now-endangered species. In this talk, Dr. Hodin will describe their successful efforts to raise this top predator in captivity through their entire life cycle, and some of the amazing things about this species that we have learned along the way. The movie explores how their relationship to salmon has shaped the tribe’s culture, history, and spirituality. A community discussion with special guests will follow the film. The Nez Perce is the oldest documented civilization in North America, with archaeological sites along Idaho’s Salmon River dating back 16,500 years. The cornerstone of their creation story is an agreement with salmon to protect its continued existence. The Nez Perce Tribe teeters on the brink of a biodiversity and cultural crisis — and their fight continues to restore and recover wild salmon to their historic numbers. As dams and climate impacts threaten to bring salmon to extinction, the movie traces the tribe’s efforts to honor their ancient agreement. (Note that Styrofoam™ refers to a specific subset of EPS made by Dow Chemical Company, which is not recycled by this group and which is typically blue.) They also accept clean, dry, flexible low-density polyethylene foam (LDPE #4) of all colors, packing peanuts of all colors and types (separated from the EPS/LDPE, and separated into biodegradable [squishy] and nonbiodegradable [crispy] types), as well as white EPS food trays that are clean and free of stains and writing. Materials are inspected at your vehicle, and disqualified materials are returned to you. Thanks to the Fort Worden PDA, materials are packed and stored at the Fort Worden Battery Putnam, then delivered to Kent once per month thanks to OlyCAP and Northwest Harvest food bank trucks. At the Kent recycling facility, machines use heat to convert the EPS and LDPE into a toothpaste-like consistency that cools into heavy, glassy blocks of polystyrene or polyethylene, which are then sold to manufacturers of products such as picture frames and construction details.
