(If this isn't helpful, our apologies, feel free to unsub below.) Big Question: Are you good with names? How about with Tribes? Do you struggle to remember everything Tribal counterparts include in their formal or traditional introductions? Do you strain to remember nuanced Indigenous titles, spelling, and pronunciation? Especially in a different language? Well, you’re not alone! It’s a common issue. But the reasons it’s important go far beyond just remembering names. With effort, curiosity, and a stack of tiny little cards, we can unlock transformative insights about an entire Nation—all starting with just one person. Names & Nations: The Bigger Insights We Seek Here’s a helpful secret: In traditional settings, Tribal counterparts often give patterned introductions, but the pattern isn’t always obvious. They often use their own language, phrases, connotations, or complexities we don’t understand. No doubt, it’s stressful—trying to remember everything. We fear how easy it is to mispronounce someone’s name, family, or people. We also don’t want to miss major cultural themes, roles, and identifiers we’re not aware of. But the pattern is there. If we look and listen closely, we discover things far more significant than what to call someone. It will accelerate our understanding of a Tribe’s history, identity, and people. I promise, if you focus your energy, attention, and sincere curiosity toward people’s names, you’ll discover amazing things. Individuals unlock the doorways to these discoveries. Traditional Introductions Let’s look at traditional introductions... Here’s one from River Kerstetter <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_SUlXGVtEBHEk_n0IYwuQQ8H893LXDj9ps_NOVIlgmj7E0oiDvhH-hQfK9g9ofDXtFLS7LCbP85iYLOi0PupQ2JLtTf-nWmmwDU1y3f6qzOZ-qlHmpkYEd4gL9qixPHxMYahP 9yuiUmmeDNwphNQGkJnqOx9hnsn&c=EfW3PkffDvkEAxhxWlFh_nnX3iOJpP61OEklX2-GQnoDH0EdnJw7Pw==&ch=gop56jMbVxTi2_eFcbcNUfWz5i56fni5ed7-OMTcXG2-rCBN6aP05w==> during an episode of Red Hoop Talk, a podcast hosted by the Association on American Indian Affairs (Check it out <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_SUlXGVtEBHEk_n0IYwuQQ8H893LXDj9ps_NOVIlgmj7E0oiDvhH-hQfK9g9ofDXjHLBa7ya94Omo8PI3o3prJbC MKHcL90ugKNX0x6uvf4DUtSnRNiUjCdsXRkwLNpfByqpWX01y9q-JAp8I3iXVBH1bCWHQwKFk1KOcekRttYlxGKvq8c3eA==&c=EfW3PkffDvkEAxhxWlFh_nnX3iOJpP61OEklX2-GQnoDH0EdnJw7Pw==&ch=gop56jMbVxTi2_eFcbcNUfWz5i56fni5ed7-OMTc XG2-rCBN6aP05w==> ): “My name is River. I’m a citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. One of the three major Oneida communities after many of us were removed from New York, but I’m Wisconsin Oneida… I grew up in Pueblo Lands, what is called Albuquerque. And now I live on Potawatomi Lands, what we call Chicago.” There’s a lot going on here! For starters, how does she identify her citizenship? And how does she connect herself to people, and places? How does she describe them? See how she refers to plural possessives, like “Pueblo Lands” and “Potawatomi Lands,” describing places like Albuquerque and Chicago. This communicates powerful connections, and reveals colonial naming and occupation impacts. (Read more here <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_SUlXGVtEBHEk_n0IYwuQQ8H893LXDj9ps_NOVIlgmj7E0oiDvhH-hQfK9 g9ofDXtFLS7LCbP85iYLOi0PupQ2JLtTf-nWmmwDU1y3f6qzOZ-qlHmpkYEd4gL9qixPHxMYahP9yuiUmmeDNwphNQGkJnqOx9hnsn&c=EfW3PkffDvkEAxhxWlFh_nnX3iOJpP61OEklX2-GQnoDH0EdnJw7Pw==&ch=gop56jMbVxTi2_eFcbcNUfWz5i56fni5ed 7-OMTcXG2-rCBN6aP05w==> .) We see this theme in how she describes her Nation’s relationship to their place of origin. She talks of a removal, “after many of us were removed from New York.” This gives you a loud clue this Nation—today in Wisconsin, isn’t originally from there. They have a relationship to another place that was damaged, disrupted, or harmed. It’s colonial impact—something deserving great sensitivity. There’s a lot more… but look what just happened: You were trying to get to know River, a person. But, through her introduction, you learned something big—very big, about her Nation of People. You discovered their disrupted relationship to place. You identified an important sensitivity around colonialism and historical trauma. This is a big deal! And you didn’t have to consult some ‘expert,’ book, or extensive research to learn it. It came from directly from her. So, next time you encounter an introduction like this, take note of themes like: * Place, places, and place-based relationships; * Practices, activities, and special subjects; * People, descendancy, relatives, and kinship; * Languages, phrases, and unfamiliar terms; * Legend elements—like characters, creatures, titles, or themes, and * Creation, emergence, or migration stories. These are huge subjects. Noticing even one yields big insights, questions, and curiosities. The next step is twofold: First, we reflect on what we learn. Second, we write it down somewhere. Then, with time and interactions, we’ll notice bigger things. It starts with something called relational indexing. 3 x 5 Insights: Relational Indexing Grab a plain old 3” x 5” index card. Better yet, buy a stack of them for a dollar at CVS. Your goal: A growing relational rolodex you can add to over time. On side one, the PERSON side: write the person’s basic info you remember from their introduction. Note how they say it, the pronunciation, pronouns, and any other titles, designations, or phrases attached to it. Your focus = the person. In future interactions, add more pieces of information. Create a card for each person, and eventually a stack for that Tribe, or organization you’re working with. Bigger insights come when we reach beyond the specific person and their official role, job title, or position. We want to better understand their relationships to others, and to their Tribe. That’s what we do with side 2… People-to-Nation: Relational Networks Envision your tribal counterpart as one node in an interconnected network. Imagine an interwoven fabric of people. It’s likely been around for thousands of years! Peter Monge and Noshir Contractor put it well in Theories of Communication Networks: “The relational tradition focuses primarily on the direct communication that establishes and maintains communication linkages. Taken collectively, these linkages create an emergent communication structure that connects different people and groups in the organization irrespective of their formal positions or roles.” So, with this in mind, flip over your index card… On Side 2, the NETWORK side: add details that connect this person to other people, subjects, places, Tribes, bands, clans, keepers, practices, languages, or anything significant. Note what they emphasize or discuss in their introductions. Your focus: who, what, and where that person is connected to. You will start to notice things, like patterns and connections. Hopefully, you'll notice lots of them. Rewarding Insights: Network Analysis Build stacks of these little index cards. They will generate insights, and deepen your understanding of a Nation of people. We can discover vast insights about a Tribe right at the surface of our interactions. We reveal big possibilities by discovering connections between people. It will yield new opportunities to carefully expand relationships with a Tribe. So, What’s Next? Start building flash cards! Review them regularly before and after your interactions with Tribes. Update them as you learn more about the Tribe in your own research. Then repeat. I guarantee this habit brings transformative insights, understanding, and relational evolution. It’s why we use it. <https://imgssl.constantcontact.com/letters/images/1101116784221/S.gif> <https://files.constantcontact.com/97d26f6c701/864c0fc8-f055-4981-8c86-0cab704b422a.jpg?rdr=true> Robert Harper <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_SUlXGVtEBHEk_n0IYwuQQ8H893LXDj9ps_NOVIlgmj7E0oiDvhH-iagbJVe2W42-U_Q18KX_8RsdxOuRAJEHWbPgwxU7lkNn9fHyz2DwKKNT9Q6z0xSjL8h42PAN1r7nbOsPiubtSF38zbfyZnCMp23 Kpo7qZPu&c=EfW3PkffDvkEAxhxWlFh_nnX3iOJpP61OEklX2-GQnoDH0EdnJw7Pw==&ch=gop56jMbVxTi2_eFcbcNUfWz5i56fni5ed7-OMTcXG2-rCBN6aP05w==> (JD, MA, MA) Executive Director America's leading expert practitioner in conflict resolution with Tribes.
