BOTTOM LINE: The fall shoulder season isn’t really a shoulder season this year, and it’s likely that it won’t be a shoulder
season in 2024 and 2025 as travelers once more begin planning their upcoming trips further ahead.
People are
excited to get
back to planning
— the worry
about another
resurgence of
COVID-19 is a
former fear, no
longer inhibiting
travelers from
making future
travel plans, even
two years out.

HONOLULU (AP) — The area around the Maui town largely
destroyed by wildfire two months ago began welcoming back
travelers on Sunday after the mayor and Hawaii’s governor pushed
ahead to restart tourism to boost the economy despite opposition
from some Lahaina residents.
Gov. Bissen said he was working hard to make sure no one affected
by the fire has to leave their temporary housing to make room for
visitors.
The county prepared a video highlighting places visitors could go
outside West Maui, including the town of Paia on Maui’s north
shore and the scenic road to Hana on the island’s east side.
The video message urged visitors to show respect by staying away
from the burn zone, not taking and posting “inappropriate images”
on social media, and following signs and instructions.
Separately, the governor’s Office of Wellness and Resilience
prepared a flyer with tips on how visitors can be respectful, which
it planned to distribute at hotels, rental car desks and other places
visitors frequent.Source: https://apnews.com/article/maui-lahaina-wildfire-tourism-

Opportunities:
Smoke and/or Heat refugee - “It has been
brutally hot in most of the country and it has
been very, very nice up here in northern
Michigan.
And we have seen a lot of people from the
Texas, Florida, Georgia area coming up north
to northern Michigan because it is so
temperate up here.”
See/Experience them before they are gone
- Starting a company that helps people visit
places that may disappear due to climate
change, such as Glacier National Park in
Montana or the Everglades in Florida, which
is threatened by rising sea levels.
Impacts: “Even when the hurricane doesn’t hit directly, it wreaks havoc
economically, emotionally — to those that have suffered previous losses
— and to our way of life,”
Hurricane Idalia’s landfall as a Category 3 storm led to a loss in revenue
from temporarily closing resorts to new guests. It also means a lengthy
cleanup period to fix gutter and other damage and beach cleanup.
Media focus on extreme weather can hurt business, too. Dan Dawson, owner of Horizon Divers in Key Largo, Florida, saw
business boom during the pandemic. Now it’s back to pre-pandemic levels. But when storms like Idalia close in, tourists
flee — even though Dawson’s spot in Key Largo was 300 miles from where Idalia hit.
“Once a storm is coming close we stop diving and once it goes by it can take up to two weeks for tourists to come back,
and that is if we don’t have any damage,” he said.
