Word of the cuts came as King County Executive Dow Constantine released his $511 million mid-biennial budget proposal this week. Constantine’s proposal eliminates around 60 vacant positions and makes other cuts to address the shortfall in the county’s general fund. The reductions are expected to save a total of $12.6 million. However, Constantine warned the county would face a “dramatic fiscal situation” and additional cuts next year without action from the state legislature that would allow King County to boost property taxes. The possible future cuts are to services like public health, the county legal system and elections workers.
