Klahanie Site Background
The ONF is considering opportunities to enhance sustainable recreation and benefits for people, wildlife, and fish at the Klahanie site. An increasing number of trees have been identified
as hazard trees, creating public safety concerns. The closed campground is also located within the floodplain of the South Fork Calawah River, which floods annually during high water
events. With a changing climate, the natural movement and flooding of the river increasingly threatens campground infrastructure and stability due to erosion. Hazard tree mitigation
would remove most old-growth trees in the campground and greatly alter the recreational setting while negatively impacting fish and wildlife habitat. The natural river and old growth
trees provide significant value for wildlife, fish, and people.
With partners, the U.S. Forest Service is working to plan and implement salmon and steelhead habitat restoration efforts within the South Fork Calawah River, including in the vicinity
of the Klahanie site. The ONF is identifying opportunities for sustainable recreation access for the local communities and visitors who value the Klahanie site and recreation access.
Community engagement is necessary to identify potential opportunities for recreational access to the Klahanie site while protecting natural and cultural resources. In the coming months,
the ONF is working with Triangle Associates (Triangle), a neutral, third-party facilitation firm, to engage stakeholders, visitors, and communities in the planning process to determine
the future of the Klahanie site.
